Souvenir Shopping: What to Buy in Mauritius

When travelling to a new country I always want to know the best places to shop and what are that country’s specialities. Shopping in Mauritius is a nice way to explore the cultures and people of Mauritius and take a little part of your trip home with you.

Mauritius is seen as a shopper’s paradise, with markets, factory stores and duty-free shops scattered around the island. Specialities are carved model ships, duty-free diamonds and designer clothing.

The market in Port-Louis (also known as Le Bazar central de Port-Louis) is the ideal place for local crafts and fabric, weave work and spice sales. The products here make fantastic souvenirs to take home from you Mauritius holiday. Remember that the salesmen are all too willing to haggle with you for a discount price.

Cashmere and woollens are very popular buys for many tourists and locals. There are wide selections of scarves and trendy jumpers, ranging from v-necks, crew necks, turtle necks, off-shoulder and boat neck available at bargain prices.

When shopping in Mauritius, t-shirts are by far, the absolute favourite buy. Never before have Ralph Lauren clothes and accessories been so affordable! And No, they are not all fake or counterfeited products. Mauritius is one of the largest producers of these great designer t-shirts and because the factories produce them locally, they are much cheaper.

During the last couple of years, the ever-increasing demand for Ralph Lauren quality products has resulted in a massive proliferation of retail shops, mostly factory outlets. You will find them almost everywhere, especially in the very touristy areas of the North – Grand Baie and Arsenal, Port Louis, Curepipe and Floréal.
